WATER QUESTIONS
From time to time, Scientific Water and Sewer receives phone calls from customers who have concerns about their water. Below are some questions and answers that may assist customers about topics they have concerns about.
- Q: Is my water safe?
A: Yes. Scientific Water and Sewer meets or exceeds the state and EPA regulations for water Quality.
- Q: What is the white stuff in my coffee-pot and fixtures?
A: Naturally occurring minerals found in your water, such as calcium, silica and magnesium tend to settle out when water evaporates or is heated. These minerals are white and accumulate on the surfaces. This residue, in most cases, can be removed by cleaning the surface with water.
- Q: Why do I have low pressure?
A: Low pressure can occur for a variety of reasons:
- Heavy water use in the area
- Broken mains
- Local fire being extinguished
- Personnel flushing mains
- Customers in Cedar Creek, Raintree, Deerfield, and Summersill have pressure-reducing valves. The pressure reducing valve filter may become clogged from sediment or minerals, which may need cleaning or replacing In some instances, the pressure-reducing valve itself may need to be replaced. The customer maintains the pressure-reducing valve.
- Q: Why is the cloudy water from my faucet fizzing?
A: Water in the distribution system is under pressure. Air sometimes dissolves in the Pressurized lines. This gives the water a cloudy or milky appearance; however, the Quality of the water is not affected. Flushing may be required.
- Q: Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?
A: Hot water heaters can harbor bacteria that cause sulfide or rotten egg smells. Replacement of the magnesium rod with aluminum rod may be necessary.
- Q: Why is my water bill so high?
A: There are a number of reasons:
- Leaks (pipes, faucets, toilets, etc.)
- Sprinkler system timer
- Usage may increase due to lawn watering, pressure washing, washing vehicles, or household usage
